ACW CHALLENGE

ACW CHALLENGE

May 12 – Friday, May 16

In honor of National Bike to Work Week, we challenge you to think actively this spring when considering transportation in Grand Rapids. Compete as an individual, or as an employee within a participating company during this one week challenge. Awards and prizes will be given to winning participants!

Winners will be announced at the Handlebar Happy Hour Special Event on Sunday May 18 at Brewery Vivant!

The following forms of active transportation are acceptable and encouraged:

  • Taking The Bus
  • Carpooling
  • Rollerblading
  • Walking & Running
  • Biking
  • Longboarding

Don’t limit yourself! Use these forms of transportation for other chores or events, not just going to and from work or school.

A “trip” is defined as a single, one-way commute using Alternative Transportation to or from a destination that could typically be made by an individual in their automobile. A trip to and from a location, therefore, counts as two trips.  All commutes (to and from work…to and from the store…etc.) count towards the challenge total.

  • 2-50 employees
  • 51-200 employees
  •  >200employees

The participating business with the highest percentage of trips per “full-time” employee by Friday, May 16 at noon wins the challenge in each category. Full-time is defined as working part-time or greater.

Example:

  • Company A has 15 full-time employees and record their total trips as 45 (or, 3 trips per full-time employee).
  • Company B has 50 full-time employees and records their total trips as 200 (or, 4 trips per full-time employee).
  • Company B wins.

Individual awards Individual awards will be determined in two categories based on individual totals submitted by Friday, May 16th at noon. These categories will have four individual winners based on their mode of transportation (new this year!):

  1. Highest number of total trips
  • Walking
  • Biking
  • Bussing
  • Carpooling
  1. Highest number of total miles
  • Walking
  • Biking
  • Bussing
  • Carpooling

All participants are eligible to win the individual awards regardless of any affiliation with a participating organization, and whether they are signed up through their workplace or not.

Each day, a random drawing will take place for those who logged a trip the day prior – there will be one winner each day!

The overall winners will be announced at the Handlebar Happy Hour event on Sunday, May 18th at 12:00pm at Brewery Vivant (925 Cherry St SE).

The winning organizations will receive a one-hour consultation with the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition to become a bicycle friendly workplace, along with other great prizes. This will also be announced at the Handlebar Happy Hour event. The individual winners will receive a prize from one of our many supporters and a certificate of participation.
